How to Improve the Students' Reading Ability



             1. Introduction .
             Reading is an important process of English learning. It is the basis of knowing well the language points, acquiring knowledge and improving the ability to use English. The importance of reading ability in English learning shows not only in English syllabus of different levels, but also in the proportion of reading item in various English examination. The reading comprehension has high proportion in present various tests, such as college entrance examination, CET, PETS and so on. .
             Due to the long-term influence of the traditional teaching method, which overemphasized on the words and syntax, the students formulate an unavailable reading habit, which affects the information input, and the ability improvement of reading comprehension. Therefore, it is necessary for us to study and research on the current way of teaching reading to get the effective and feasible measures to improve the students reading ability.
             2.Body.
             2.1The Current Situation of Reading Teaching and its Disadvantages.
             According to the syllabus, the teacher must give the students adequate reading practice to pick up their reading speed. During the guidance of the main idea and their implication reading material's, then the teacher directs the students to judge the author's intention of writing the article. Finally, the teacher can conduct the students to evaluate the style of the materials. Thus the students can get their reading skills improved during the course and they are able to cope with the language in complicated situations.
             But viewed on the students' present reading ability, they are far behind to achieve the above requirements. It has something to do with the students' rudimentary knowledge and their study habits. But it also does relate with our traditional method of teaching reading.
             2.1.1.The Reading Speed.
             The traditional way of teaching reading is based on the classical reading theory. In classical reading teaching theory, comprehension depends on the vocabulary.
