Business Ethics

It encompasses the whole system of social responsibility. Mitroff (1983) said that "an organisation is not necessarily a thing per se but a series of relationships between a wide series of parties". That is, it is not only the organisation to be considered, but also the employees and the community in which the business operates. Together all three must work together, not only to create wealth maximization but societal expansion and sustainability.

There has been an increased interest in business ethics over the last few years. The question is has that been driven by business or the "public"? Several surveys have been compiled to look at how both society and employees view business ethics. Mark Dolliver (2000) believes that a study by the Ethics Resources Centre of Washington DC determined that although workers expect their company to what was right there was an overwhelming pressure to compromise such standards. However it was not made clear if this was necessarily from the organisation or the public. An article in CA magazine (Jun/Jul 2000) written by "Anonymous" regarding a survey by KPMG of 1,000 Canadian Corporations and 300 public sector organisations put forward the notion that it was more public pressure that was leading to a rise in ethical behavior by business. Hale (1999) also put forward this view on his interpretation of the result of the Millennium Poll on Corporate Social responsibility.
Hale (1999) said "The pollsters say these results may show the other side of the "small government" and privatization push." Hale goes on to note that the poll's overall opinion was that the "perceived roles and responsibilities of the date, society and companies have changed, and society's expectations of corporate behavior are changing quickly.".
However this idea of only moving to ethics because of a change in public opinion is somewhat challenged by Frederick (1999) who wrote a brief "coda like addition" to his book Values, nature and Culture in the American Corporation (Frederick, 1995).
