Celtic Civilization


            The Celtic Civilization was a very complex civilization. They had various social classes, which separated them into three classes such as: aristocrats, common people; and a learned class that also included lawyers, poets, and priests. They were divided into small tribes which the members of each small tribe claimed a common ancestor. The Celts also had a political structure, which also goes along with the social classes.
             The Celts are a race of people who are native speakers of a Celtic language. The languages that they spoke were Breton, Irish, Welsh, and Scottish Gaelic, which formed a branch of Indo-European family languages. .

             The first sign of the Celts was in 700 BC but they were known as the Hallstatt Celts. The Hallstatt Celts were the first people to make iron. By 500 BC the Celts had spread to France, Portugal, Spain, and the British Isles. They also were in Northern Italy and raided as far south as Rome, in which they looted in 390 BC. Around 300 and 200 BC some of the groups moved into the Balkans, including what is now called Bulgaria and Greece.

             The early Celts used the Greek alphabet to write in there own language. "In the early centuries of the Celts the used a primitive form of writing called ogam, which survives in stone inscriptions." (The World Book Encyclopedia C-Ch Vol3 pg. 342) In the middle ages the Celts adopted the Roman alphabet and also developed a large body of written literature also including myths and legends.
