Beauty in the Media: Beauty in Reality

Beauty in the Media: Beauty in Reality.
At some point in your life you have picked up a magazine or news journal and casually flipped through the pages to see what it was all about. Did you happen to notice that the women depicted in the articles do not resemble the women you see every day at work or at home? Did you notice how the women look "fake" with their flawless figures and complexions? Did you happen to flip to the section on the newest and best diet for women? Have you ever wonder why the media only portrays these women as modern beauties? The women of today, of yesterday or tomorrow, do not resemble the pictures in magazines. This is a serious problem and the media are ultimately causing women to suffer from severe depression and seriousness illnesses just to try to fit the picture that is portrayed as a beautiful woman.
Women and their bodies are prime figures of the media. However, what we see on the pages of magazines and screens of Hollywood productions are not what most woman truly look like. These images are carefully airbrushed and manipulated to give that sense of flawlessness. When a woman sees images of these media beauties she is quick to compare herself to the image. As Bissell states in News Photographer magazine, "the media are a defining factor in girls' increased pressure to be thin" (April2002). Is it any wonder that so many women are obsessed with their appearance? .
If you were to pick up a magazine right now, it is likely that within that magazine there is an article dealing with weight loss or a new diet. Melissa Abramovity of Current Health 2 states that "social factors that strongly influence body image includes the increased promotion of diet plans in the media, along with pressure from friends and family to have a so-called perfect body" (Feb2002, pg. 26). Nearly every ad for dieting systems has testimonials from presumed users or advertises miraculous make-overs of severely overweight women.
