            In this novel Chekov has successfully portrayed a typical lamentable woman in his temporary society " Olenka, the darling, a women with rare gift of love. .
             Her nickname "darling- maybe mainly come from her sweetness. At the sight of her mild, tender eyes, full rosy cheeks, soft white neck, and nave smile, either men or women could not refrain from calling her "darling-. .
             She is compassionate, gentle, and sentimental. When Kukin, the owner of an outdoor theater and a resident in the lodge Olenka inherited from her father, complained about the rain and the audience every night under her room, she was touched by his misfortune and cried for him. Gradually she grew to love this plain-looking man. .
             She is so delicate and vulnerable that she couldn't exist without loving someone. Her love is so devoted that she even dissolved herself into her husband's life. Meanwhile she is obedient and dependent. She has no thoughts or opinions of her own. All of what she talked to others was from her husband's words. She found her meaning of living through the daily trivial housework, helping her husband with his business and repeating his words as her own. Whenever she was with her husband, she felt her happiness. .
             However, Chekov hasn't arranged her a smooth life. In order to emphasize her typical characteristics, he wants Kukin died and gives Olenka a quick new marriage. She is still softhearted, simple, and lovely. She couldn't lose the center in her life " someone to be loved. Her great maternal love is so selfless and infinite that she can never stop to love. So inevitably she fell in love with another man and started her new life as a standard wife as she once was. Still dealing with the trivial housework and helping her husband's business, she was still repeating her husband's opinion to others. However, on the other hand, from the modern view, she is quite a survivor, for she could adapt to the new life so fast and completely.
