Deduction is a specific conclusion restricted by the actual evidence or claims made in a chain of reasoning that leads up to it. Sherlock Holmes called his method deductive reasoning, in fact, he did more than that. He would observe something about the scene and then interpret it in the context of a case. He honed the skill of recognizing the significance of something that no one else noticed. Which means he relied on abduction first before building a chain of deductive reasoning. Sherlock Holmes is the world's greatest detective, and the world's first Consulting detective. He is consulted by police and other private detectives, as well as occasionaly taking on cases directly from clients, who range from kings to paupers. His use of deductive method and encyclopedic knowledge of crimes allowed to solve the most complex cases. .
For example Sherlock Holmes used deductive reasoning to solve the mystery in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson were asked to investigate a murder mystery centered on the death of Sir Charles Baskerville. The approach that Holmes used to solve the mystery is rather practical. He made observations and payed particular attention to minute details in order to come to a conclusion. Holmes first exercises his deductive reasoning approach in the beginning of the book when he speaks to Watson about a walking stick that is in the apartment. There are certainly one or two indications upon the stick. Holmes draws upon evidence and details before deciding on a concrete answer.
