To the Loman family it is all about achieving the American Dream. No matter what happens they feel obligated to just grin and bear it. When Willy's suicidal tendencies are revealed to the family, they never confront him about it. The family is too frightened that by talking about it, it will become less of a postulation and more of a verity. The American Dream could not be complete without the image of a stable financial situation. Although the Loman family is able to achieve this image by borrowing money every week, it does not make it a reality. Real is the way the family is constantly arguing. Real is the way the family is keeping secrets from each other. Real is the way the family is falling apart.
The harder the Loman family tries to achieve the American Dream and become the perfect family, they drift further and further away from their goal. What they do not realize is that their idea of the perfect family is completely unrealistic to what a truly perfect family should be. White picket fences, plastic smiles and a star-football player for a son is not perfect. Perfect is a family that can talk to each other. Perfect is a family that can count on one another whenever times are tough. Perfect is a family that argues and yells and resolves the issues they have with one another, not letting their anger build up over years and holding a constant grudge against another family member. Perfect is staying true to yourself. Over the years, these are the family values that have prevailed. If only the Loman family could understand that it is the hard times that families come by that make them stronger. Each tear, each bead of sweat, each spoken syllable makes a family closer. Although it is rare to come by a family that can live up to these standards, it is achievable.
