Last Spin, The - Analysis

The last spin is about two teenage gang members playing the game of Russian roulette to decide the ownership of a patch of ground. .
They've never seen each other before and this challenge isn't personal " I've got no bad blood for you-.
While playing the game they strike a conversation and find out they have a lot in common and they are really there as pawns of the gangs. .
Through conversations they both find out that it was not their choice being in the gang and it was just a matter of neighbourhoods and protection.
They developed a friendship quickly and every time the gun was clicked to their heads it reminded them of their gang responsibilities. .
They almost had the strength to draw away from the peer pressure experienced in groups and base a friendship purely on individual characteristics.
However, the author's ultimate cynicism is shown when on their last spin, at the least expected time, they are again brought back to the reality of their club duties with Danny blowing his head off.
The main ideas the author is trying to suggest through this story are that even in war you can find friendship and a common bond between enemies.
Linked to this is the issue of the pointlessness of war, the instigators of war are not the ones that suffer rather those who are sent to fight for the sake of their leader and several hundred yards of grass.
The main characters, Danny and Tigo, find that at various times they have questioned reasons for joining their club and reasons of why they are still there. .
They have never revealed this to their peers out of the fear of being shamed out of misunderstanding.
The constant reference to them as boys and the uniform jackets they wore displayed their lack of identity.
But, throughout the story they continually reassure themselves of their alliances with their club while getting more and more uncertain of what the club has done to deserve this loyalty.
They begin to show empathy for each other and at one point optimistically contemplate life without clubs.
