Alexandre Dumas

The other musketeers all risk their lives defending the king from the Cardinal's army also known as the Royal Guard. (Parker, 18) Because of their code of honor and dedication they would do anything for what they believed in.
In The Count of Monte Cristo there are very few characters that are honorable throughout the whole story. One character who is would be M. Morrel. Dumas portrays this character as a man who is compassionate of the young Dantes and promotes him to captain at an extremely young age based on his faith in the boy. When Dantes is imprisoned for treason Morrel is the only one who would help the father try to free Dantes until they heard of his execution. All of the other characters seem to go through stages of their lives where honor means nothing to them. The revenge of the count is an excellent example of this. .
And now farewell to kindness, humanity, and gratitude . . .I have subsided myself to place punishment on the wicked in the world. Pg 391. .
Even Abbe Faria speaks of his days in Napoleons army when he burned a church full of men just because he was ordered to. "To my everlasting shame I did" (288). Among the dishonorable character Mondego would have to be the best example of this. Here is a man who throughout the period of knowing Dantes pretended to be his friend. All the while he was trying to get Mercedes, the woman Dantes was to marry to sleep with him. In the end this infatuation with Mercedes was what drove him to betray Dantes as a traitor and not after reading the letter warn Dantes of its materials. Others would argue that Dumas turns Dantes into a dishonorable man when he becomes the Count of Monte Cristo. (Grenier, 4) After Edmond escapes from prison after eleven years he is filled hate and will use any means possible for executing his revenge on those who have betrayed him. Before dying the priest tries to persuade Dantes not to use the money for revenge, but for good.
