Any chance of a loss of career or reduction of work was enough for people to keep quite about their political affiliations. There were few movies made about the depression during the 1930's. The critically acclaimed "Grapes of Wrath" was made.

People were worried that if there was communists in Hollywood they could influence the public with communistic propaganda through movies. Communists were said to place subversive messages into Hollywood films and discriminating against unsympathetic colleagues. A further concern was that communists were in a position to place negative images of the United States in films that would have wide international distribution. What was totally ignored in the hysteria of communism were the realties of the Hollywood studio system in the 1930's and 40's. One of the strongest characteristics of the studio system was the absolute control of the studio moguls who ran their business as strictly entertainment. A quote taken from Sam Goldwyn was "If you wanted a message, try Western Union." When there was political edge in a movie the bosses were involved throughout the entire production and had the final cut. Evidence of leftist dialogue in Hollywood films was extremely slim. Film workers were instructed that their primary job was to keep soviet and leftism support out of films. They wanted no films that advocated social change or that criticized foreign policy. Especially put under the intimidation were screenwriter. When blacklisting began screenwriter were the primary targets under review by the committee. .
             When the subpoena's began by HUAC or (House on Un-American Activities Committee) the first instinct of Hollywood was to fight back. Actresses and actors such as Marsha Hunt and Humphrey Bogart made a show of attending the subpoena's and showing support for their blacklisted friends as an effort to show that they thought it was wrong and un-American.
