Montana 1948

A shuttering thought! As he returned toward the ranch, he observed from a distance as his father confronted his own brother, Uncle Frank, about the allegations from the reservation. At one point, sensing a threatening gesture by Frank, Davy pointed the pistol at Frank's head and considered the consequences of squeezing the trigger. He thought about the shot; the wind, the type of weapon, and the distance. However, he didn't think about the law, justice or right and wrong. Fortunately, he decided the distance was too great, the pistol too small. The scene ended as Wes and Frank shook hands and walked away shoulder to shoulder.
I believe that there was more than adolescent frustration and emotions from the events of that summer that lead Davy's thoughts and actions that afternoon. Within the pages of this novel, Watson gives clues to a trait Davy hated in his father, a trait he inherited at least in part. Like Wes, Davy did not like confrontation. He noticed this trait repetitively in his father, but in the end, it was a trait he shared. I will explore the emotions and frustrations of that week, those typical for young boys and those not so common. I will also study Davy's own tendency toward this trait and what role it had in bringing about the troubling events and thoughts in this scene. .
First, I considered the real reason Grandpa gave Davy an automatic pistol, not a rifle, and a full box of ammunition, enough ammunition to kill every coyote in eastern Montana? Did grandpa sense the pressure he was feeling? He didn't know of Maria and the secret she had revealed of Uncle Frank. However, as father of two boys, he must have known of other tensions in Davy's life. Sexual tension for one, Davy was at an age where curiosity starts to become desire and sexual thoughts become more frequent. At least twice in the last week Davy had sexual thoughts; first when he noticed Marie's brown legs revealed from under her skirt and then remembered her naked body he had once viewed in the shower.
