One day in the life of Ian Denisovich

When the 104th's turn comes to enter the mess hall Shukov had to fight to go in, "[Shukov] kicked someone's knee, shoved, and caught a blow on his ribs but he" got in. The fight between Shukov and the zek is a man vs. man conflict because Shukov had to physically brawl with a man to get his "lawful stew." The last example of man versus man conflict takes place in the barracks at the night when Shukov is about to go to sleep, when he is talking to Alyosha about the meaning to prayer. When Alyosha asks why Shukov doesn't pray, Shukov replies, "prayers are like those appeals of ours. They either don't get through or they're returned with 'rejected' scrawled across them." The speech between Shukov and Alyosha is a conflict because Alyosha is trying to get Shukov to pray to god who refuses to do so.
In addition to conflicts between Shukov and other zeks, Shukov also faces man vs. self conflicts. The earliest of the conflicts takes place as he walks from the mess hall to the dispensary. As he was walking to the dispensary, "he remembered to buy a couple of glasses of tobacco from the Lett he had forgotten. Shukov stamped his feet Should he turn back? But it was a short distance to the dispensary so he jogged on." Shukov's arguing with himself about whether he should go to the dispensary or go back is a conflict because he had to argue with himself whether having a day off or tobacco was worth more. The next conflict takes place when the 104th is marching to the power station to get to work. While marching Shukov spies Tsezar smoking a cigarette and he was "tempted to ask Tsezar for a smoke but he kept silent." Shukov resisting his temptation to ask Tsezar is a conflict with himself because he would rather keep his dignity and not lower himself because a cigarette will be gone in a few minutes but if he lowers himself his dignity maybe gone forever. The last of the conflicts between Shukov and himself takes place when the 104th is working in the power station.
