Komodo National Park is located 200 nautical miles to the east of Bali. It nestles in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago between the large islands of Flores and Sunbawa, all of which are apart of Indonesia's Lesser Sunda Islands. Although the park is known mainly for the main island of Komodo, Komodo National Park encompasses two other major islands, Rinca and Padar, not to mention numerous small island, altogether combining to 603 square kilometres of land. However, with a total size of 1817 square kilometres, marine waters dominate it at a size a size of 1214 square kilometres. (See below for maps of the Komodo National Park).

The wilderness environment and landscape of Komodo National Park has been and still is influenced by its location on the Ring of Fire. Therefore, the topography of this park is dominated by steep and rugged hillsides, a result of the combination of ancient volcanic eruptions and more recently, tectonic uplift of sedimentary seabeds. This mountainous landscape reaches a maximum of 735 metres at the summit of Gunung Satalibo on the island of Komodo.
Although the landscape of Komodo National Park is dominated by mountainous hills, there are many other key features of this wilderness environment. Despite the fact that there is very little flat ground, there is known to be rocky and dry gullies. Most of the island is lontar savannah with remnants of rainforest and bamboo forest at higher elevations.
As water covers the majority of this wilderness environment, the ocean is one of the major features of National park. The crystal clean pristine waters are home to hundreds of coral species, mangroves and seagrass. The irregular coastline is indented and separated by rocky headlands. Overall, the landscape of Komodo National Park can simply be described as breathtaking and amazing.
This diverse landscape contributes significantly to the remoteness and wilderness of the region.
