Greed: The Evil In Every Man

Since the beginning of man's time, there has been his overwhelming need to succeed and be better off than others around him. It must be the evolved form of natural selection where competition is necessary to survive. Whatever the motive, it is blatantly captured in Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. The main character in the play is Macbeth who is driven by personal ambition and his wife to become king at any expense, including slaying some of his personal friends and their families. This can be seen in the murder of King Duncan, the slaying of Macduff's family and Malcolm coming to the throne. .
As Macbeth and Banquo are walking across the moor after a victory, they encounter 3 witches who prophesize Macbeth's appointing as Thane of Cawdor and eventual king of Scotland. Not believing the witches, they return to greet King Duncan and tell of their victory. Upon their arrival, Macbeth is informed that he is the newly appointed Thane of Cawdor. At this point, the tone of the play changes completely from one of boastful victory and joy to evil greed and murder. Duncan told Macbeth he would be dining at his house that evening. Already conjuring up a plot to murder Duncan, Macbeth sent a letter ahead to his wife informing her of his new prestige. This as it was to him, acts as poison to the mind as well. By the time they arrive and Duncan falls asleep, Macbeth and the Lady begin their plans of doing away with the king. They do this not out of spite, hate or anger, but out of their hunger for power. Macbeth wishes for the prophecies of the witches to come true and begins to help move it along and bring it to life. This greed blinds him from reality and any future consequences and forces him to murder King Duncan and the guards. Macbeth's conscience is heavily laid upon with guilt and he realizes he has sealed his fate. .
"Had I but died an hour before this chance,.
I had liv"d a blessed time; for, from this instant.
