He was the oldest of three boys and five girls. The family lived in Freiberg until 1859, when the family first moved to Leipzeg then to Vienna. Sigmund's family was a quite poor Jewish family and was forced to live in crowded apartment. Sigmund's father, Jacob Freud, was 49 years old when he was born. Jacob was a wool merchant that only made enough money to support he and his family. Jacob Freud was previously married, and in this marriage he had two older sons. Sigmund's mother, Jacob's second wife, was only twenty years old when she gave birth to baby Sigmund. Sigmund had to older half brothers and both got along quite well with young Sigmund.(2).
At a young age Freud's parents had noticed Sigmund's over achievement and interest in his schooling. Sigmund was more eager and dedicated to learn than his younger siblings. Freud had many interest, but his career choices were restricted because of his Jewish heritage. His curiosity and intellect finally led him to pursue his passion for medicine. In the year 1873 Sigmund Freud enters the University of Vienna. He attended the University for four years where he studied and earned his medical degree by age 26. After he had graduated and earned his degree, Freud never really was to clear of himself on what career he would like to pursue. It was own personal experiences and emotional problems whether good or bad that he was interested in. .
Sigmund Freud grew up a child with many insecurities and phobias. His first phobia was the fear of being on a train. He first experienced this fear as a child from the long uncomfortable train rides his family endured while moving.
