Post Communist Russia

However, redevelopment of Russia has proved to be an extremely difficult task, as Russian government has faced oppositions, violent as well as non-violent, at several fronts. Despite of the fact that Russian Federation is considerably weak in terms of military power and political influence, it has persuaded its ex-member states to disarm themselves of nuclear and other destructive weapons, in order to ensure peace and harmony in the region. It should however be noted that all such efforts so far have proved to be unsuccessful. Remnick and other critics believe that Russia's inability to disarm its neighbouring state can primarily be associated to its weakening military power and influence in the region. Over the past few years, the country has attempted to abandon several tanks, planes and other equipments and have laid off thousands of soldiers, simply because the government had no means to pay the salaries of the officers or to bear the maintenance costs of military machinery and equipment. .
Remnick observes that the Russia's transition into a "democracy" has proved to be an extremely difficult task. Being a victim of autocracy and czarism for centuries, Russia's political and social structure was not suitable for modern democratic models. Although, Russian President Boris Yeltsin attempted to revolutionize the political structure by adopting some democratic ideals but critics believe that he was in fact trying to avoid the increasing influence of conservative elements in Russia's political system. External critics and analysts have viewed the political development in the post-communist Russia with scepticism because of the prevalence of certain autocratic practices in the region. The most controversial of these is the use of powers of executive decree by Yeltsin administration and his successors. However, in later years, a modern and more liberal democratic system replaced the traditional Soviet system.
