Addonizio's "First Poem for You" & Drayton's "Since There is

Comparison of Addonizio's "First Poem for You" & Drayton's "Since There is No Help-.
Love is a concept that flows through almost every aspect of human life, specifically poetry. There are many forms of love including passionate love; friendly love, parental love, unrequited love, and many other forms of the complicated emotion that have been subject of great poetry. Two sonnets that share the common theme of love are Michael Drayton's "Since There's No Help Come Let Us Kiss and Part" and "First Poem for You" by Kim Addonizio.
Addonizio and Drayton's sonnets both deal with the idea of love being scary, but in very different ways. In the first part of Drayton's sonnet he talks about ending his relationship because there is nothing left to it. He even goes as far to say that he is glad he can free himself. He wishes for nothing more than to pretend it had ever happened. Despite this, the tone of the poem seems bitter. Even though Drayton says he is happy to see the relationship end, there is still the feeling that he is trying to save face but putting up a tough exterior. Deep inside he is terrified about not having this love in his life anymore. .
The Turn of the poem, when we realize he is scared, is when Drayton talks about love dying as if it were a person. He wants to know if in the very last moments of life, when no one believes in it anymore, can love survive? Will it be able to recover? After all of his talk about being through with love, he throws all his hope in the notion that somehow, love can make it through. .
Addonizio however thinks about love and is scared by it. The tattoos in the poem can be compared to the permanent committed love she wishes she could attain. By only touching the tattoos in the dark she can keep her distance from them, the committed love. She knows that she loves this person, she goes so far as to say she knows him by instinct. Even the way the poem is written, the detail used to describe the tattoos conveys a natural feeling, completely comfortable.
