Atticus is a main character in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird. He is the father of two kids, Jem and Scout, and he is a lawyer. Atticus is a good father because of the way he treats his children by getting them whatever they want. He shows this by the kindness in the way he talks to his children, and by showing affection towards them.
First evidence, stating that Atticus is a good father is when Atticus pats Jem on the head (Ch. 15, Pg. 155); this shows that he is affectionate towards Jem. A good father always shows affection to his children. This happens after the incident with Mr. Cunningham and other people outside the jailhouse. Mr. Cunningham gets embarrassed and leaves, Because of Jem not listening to Atticus and the kids having to stay. Atticus pats Jem on the head because he was proud of Jem and this shows he loves him too.
Second evidence to the claim that Atticus is a good father is when he says, "Just one more week son."(Ch. 11, Pg. 109). He says this when Jem's days of reading to Mrs. Dubose are almost over. When he says this he uses the word, son, showing he loves him, and he will do best for him. .
The last evidence to prove my claim is when Atticus writes to Uncle Jack to bring two air rifles (Ch. 9, Pg. 79). Atticus knew that his kids loved air rifles, so he got it for them on Christmas, when Uncle Jack comes. By this we can see that Atticus loves his kids and he would really love to see them happy. We can tell Scout is happy because she brags about it by saying, "Jem and me got air rifles."(Pg. 80).
One evidence showing that Atticus is a bad father is when he tells Jem and Scout not to make caricatures of people. This shows that Atticus always thinks his kids are always making fun of people. This shows that he is a bad father by thinking his kids are always making fun of people. This claim is not greater than my original claim because there are lot more proofs showing that Atticus is a good father than a bad father.
