Discuss how the speaker makes use of varied imagery of the p

Donne uses violent and fierce imagery to represent his viewpoint on the nature of love. The images created in The Broken Heart all share a sadistic characteristic. His attitude is depicted from the hostile imagery that he uses to describe love. Though all of the images are very different scenarios, they all have the same negative affect on the attitude toward love. .
Donne opens the poem with the idea that love could eat ten people in one hour. "But that it can ten in less space devour." Though this doesn't openly bring show a negative attitude usually being "Devoured" and referring to a human is not a positive thing. .
The analogy between love and the plague shows that Donne's attitude toward the nature of love is pessimistic. This shows that Donne is comparing love to the plague, something feared for its deadliness. This presents the idea that Donne is afraid of love, as if it were a disease or something terrible that would kill him if he got too close. .
Love cannot be found by Donne, love will catch him. "But us love draws." This proposes that you cannot avoid love. Once you have been found you will be swallowed whole. Donne uses the simile "as by chain'd shot2, whole ranks do die." Comparing a war device killing many men to love reveals the disapproving viewpoint Donne has on love. .
Donne does not only think being "attacked" by love is harmful, but once love has chosen its victim it will destroy its heart like glass. "At one first blow did shiver it as glass." This emphasizes the impact that love will have on the victim. By using imagery to show the heart a shattered glass shows that Donne has an ice-like heart and has a cold outlook towards love. .
The lasting affect love has had on Donne has made him a lesser person, symbolized by the images of the shards of glass all showing a smaller reflection of himself. His attitude is that love will make you weaker and though you will survive you will not be able to love again.
