Television and it

" On the other hand, a study was .
performed in Notel, Canada which pertained to a small rural town that did not have television until 1973. Before the town received its first taste of television a psychologist at the University of British Columbia by the name of Tannis MacBeth Williams went to perform a study. Williams studied school-age children in Notel just before they had TV and then again two years later. His results are stated in the following quotes, "We found a significant and fairly dramatic increase in both physical and verbal aggression.". "Other people have sometimes reported our findings by saying that the level of verbal aggression and the level of physical aggression more than doubled.".
The fact that a given person sees more than 8000 people die on television before they reach adolescence is horrendous. It is no wonder that many reports show that television gives people a false sense of reality. This is stated in the fact that many programs are now forced to display disclaimers which state, "Do not try this at home." Hundreds of people are injured each year attempting a wrestling move they've seen on TV or attempting a stunt they've seen on such shows as "Jackass." With these facts in mind it is very difficult to devaluate the studies which show that television does have an adverse effect on today's youth.
With the invention of television also came an explosion of pop-culture. Today's youth now seems to be more concerned with the make-ups and break-ups of celebrities .
than they are with the international affairs that affect our lives on a daily basis. It is said that the average person spends one-third of their life enveloped in watching TV. It is also said that these individuals are "rotting their brains." A bigger issue here is the fact that literacy in the United States has declined dramatically. Many individuals do not make an effort to read. This lack of effort has made America a less intelligent/aware country overall.
