The Dedication and Political Activism of Golda Meir


The mission seemed doomed to fail since it was the very beginning of the Great Depression, but yet Golda returned victorious, with money in hand (Noble 38-41).
             By 1933, Jewish immigration into Palestine began in earnest. The rise of Hitler to power in Germany and the low immigration quotas into the United States made the Jewish communities in Palestine a very attractive alternative to the horrors that European Jews faced by staying where they were (Noble 41-42).
             Golda Myerson held other Zionist talks in the United States to bolster support from Americans. Golda was also interested in convincing more Jews to immigrate to Palestine, to bring in numbers.

             Golda also conducted various labor contract negotiations. She traveled extensively between Palestine and the United States because of the importance of labor relations and rescuing Jews from Hitler's Germany (Noble 47).
             Between the years 1936 and 1939, the British, which had control of Palestine, did not act favorably towards the idea of introducing new immigrants to the area. The British at this time were, however, very friendly towards the Jewish settlers in Palestine. The Arabs of the region were on friendly terms with Hitler's Germany. The High Commander of Great Britain had enormous Jewish sympathies; the Arabs had rebelled against the British in efforts to get the British to leave the region (Noble 48).
             By 1936, Jewish settlers in Palestine were adding to their territories by sometimes taking advantage of an old Palestinian law about taking possession of land (Noble 49). This squatting was sanction by leaders of the Histadrut, but Arabs saw these tactics as land-grabs.

             Golda Myerson was put in charge of creating a maritime service in 1937. Jewish settlements needed means to conduct business through the seas. Golda set out to make this maritime service a reality, and again went to the United States to ask for money to build a Jewish harbor in Tel Aviv (Noble 50-51).
