Unfortunately, he is not very intelligent. While George enjoys getting drunk and wasting his money, Lennie, on the other hand, adores animals and likes to pet them. Unfortunately, he forgets how strong he is and usually kills the animals. The two men do, however, have something in common; they both share the dream of one day owning their own farm. George wants freedom to work at his own pace, and Lennie simply wants to tend to the rabbits.
There is a very strong bond between the two men. Lennie looks up to George, and he has a great deal of respect and admiration for him. It is also very evident that Lenny could not survive without George. Although George feels sorry for Lennie, he finds him almost impossible to deal with, because he is almost always getting the two of them into trouble. Although George would not admit it, he needs Lennie just like Lennie needs him. Lennie is the one who is responsible for attracting the bosses, because of his tremendous capabilities. George is an average worker, and they get their jobs because of Lennie. .

Throughout the story, George and Lennie come into contact with some interesting people, who are very similar to them, in that they are all lonely. The first man that they meet is Candy. He is an old man who has been at the ranch for a long time, and he has the capability to remember the people who have come and gone on the ranch. Although he does not do much work on the ranch, he can do small odd jobs around the farm. He had lost his hand in an accident, which makes him less useful than the other men. The other workers do not hate him, since he only gets out of the work because he is old. He has a companion, his dog, whose life parallels his own life. The dog was once an active sheepdog, but he has since aged and now is only kept around because he is liked by the workers. Later on in the book, the men all agree that the best thing for the dog is to shoot it.
