Marx critical reveiw

A criticism of Marx and Engels theory of the history of social change is that they see each stage of history as having a conflict between classes and through this conflict there is an ascension to the next social order, however, this pattern does not fit the historical record as history cannot be simplified to a set of individual separate stages. .
Marx and Engels also write that the bourgeoisie have also removed the power and importance of those who had honoured and respected occupations such as the doctor, the lawyer and the priest and merely turned them into their paid wage labourer. They assume that every member of society becomes part of a simple two class model of society and those members on the fringe of the ruling bourgeoisie class are either absorbed into the bourgeoisie or more typically prolaterialised.
In the extract Marx and Engels write that the proletariat are exploited through the division of labour and that the ever advancing technology and increasing mechanisation of manufacture creates a worker that is no more than an appendage of the machine and the value of a workman's labour is restricted to that of his subsistence and enough for him to simply survive. They also view the exploitation of the proletariat as not being solely limited to the division of labour but after they leave the workplace they are exploited through their wage by other aspects of the bourgeoisie such as the landlord or the shopkeeper.
Within the extract Marx and Engels bring forward the concept of revolution as an active force which can change the social order. The polarisation of the bourgeois and proletariat and the deskilling of the proletariat causes increasing class conflict and struggle between them. The proletariat is not a fixed concept but it proves through many changes. This begins with Conflict and Struggle against the bourgeoisie. Initially the Conflict is carried out only by individual labourers, next by the whole work force of the factory and then by all the work people of one trade, against the bourgeoisie that is directly exploiting them.
