Domestic violence, and how it effects children

However, older children react differently. Boys seem to express their distress much more outwardly. They may become aggressive and disobedient. Sometimes they start to use violence to try to solve problems, as if the acts displayed at home has become a foundation for this behavior. Alcohol and drugs can start to play a role in these boys lives as well (Volpe, Joseph 1). .
Girls are more likely to keep their distress inside. They may withdraw from other people and become anxious or depressed. Often their self images are altered and they develop low self esteems. It is common for girls living in a home where domestic violence is present, to incur an eating disorder, or to harm themselves by taking overdoses or cutting themselves (Volpe, Joseph 1). .
In general children living in these conditions often start to do poorly at school. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder ,that is, have nightmares and flashbacks and be easily startled, can also arise (Volpe, Joseph 1). Reasons that children may suffer emotional harm include: they are abused themselves, they see others in the family being abused, they have to defend someone else in the family, or are being encouraged to join in the abuse. These children are not being looked after properly, especially if the mother becomes depressed or starts to drink too much. Other people avoid the family because they know what is going on (the children may lose friends and find it hard to make new ones). Children may also suffer from a loss of a parent through separation, or even death. Sometimes the mothers think that the best thing to do is to move with their children, even if their funds are limited . As a result of the move the children are forced to start attending a new school, and end up loosing their friends. To make a hard situation worse, in some cases, the parents separate and the arguments actually get worse with the children being used as pawns in the parents" legal battles over money and contact with the children (Volpe, Joseph 1).
