The Atkins Solution

If you were to take a random visit to any local grocery store lately you would notice a new and unusual aisle of a certain kind of food, a "low-carb" food. An anti-carbohydrate diet known as the Atkins (named after its creator Robert C. Atkins, M.D), has been sweeping the nation over the last couple of years. For those who follow it strictly, they swear by it with the notion that no other weight loss program takes off the pounds quite like the Atkins. Sounds like the perfect diet doesn't it? Theoretically it is, but many physicians around the country are still hesitant to recommend the diet to their patients who are seeking to lose weight. The skepticism is backed by the alleged kidney and liver problems that can be brought about by the high fat/low carbohydrate diet. But with intelligent and well-respected doctors arguing both sides of the coin there seems to be no general consensus.
Dr. Atkins originally wrote his book, New Diet Revolution, in 1972 when he realized what an epidemic diabetes had become in America. His claims were that granulated sugar and over eating of carbohydrates were to blame. His book was immediately met with criticism from the general medical community. It was completely contradictory to the diet plans of the time and alas Atkins" idea remained on the fringe until the re-release of his book in 1992.
The 90's ushered in a new era of body conscious people with money to spend on an idea that sounded like it would help them get in shape. It was the right time and place for Atkins to reintroduce his dieting ideals to America. His book, though still criticized by his peers, sold like hot cakes.
Today the Atkins diet is more popular than ever with millions of Americans abiding by and growing numbers of popularity worldwide. But why, with so many other diet plans has this one particularly attracted so many people? I think the answer is relatively simple.
