By all accounts, Hitler was "a physical wreck" (Trevor-Roper 57). He started taking a lot of drugs and injections in order to cope with his condition and the stresses of the job. Next, Trevor-Rover focuses on the court in defeat and how the German government handled defeat in different ways. The historian also touches base on the love affair and the short-lived marriage of Eva Braun and Hitler. Chapter Four is the longest of the book and the most informative of Hitler's final days. This chapter discusses the crisis within the government and life-long decisions that Hitler was faced with. It also includes information on Hitler's fifty-sixth birthday and his birthday receptions. Trevor Roper continues his account by detailing the siege of the bunker that takes place on April 25-28, 1945. He also talks about Himmler, the SS commander, and how his "treachery," as Hitler conceived it to be, "was the signal for the end" (Trevor-Roper 169). Hitler then writes his last will and testament and married Eva Braun during the early morning hours of April 29. The seventh chapter concludes the book with the death of Hitler. .
The main goal of Trevor-Roper's book was to put together a series of events that eventually led to Hitler's death. Through his investigation, the author concludes that Hitler committed suicide and had "shot himself through the mouth" (Trevor-Roper). He also contends that the bodies had been burned and buried. His investigation was very informative of when, how, and why certain things occurred. He pointed out facts to persuade the reader to take sides with the American-British viewpoints of that time period. This is that Hitler was indeed dead, contrary to the opinion that many believed him to have escaped. Trevor-Roper developed his theory and argued his points nicely. In his attempt to show the whole view of The Last Days of Hitler he even included a key map of Hitler's bunker.
