Why Can

Computers still can't see as humans do for a multitude or reasons. One reason is the grandmother cell theory. Consider this. Computers only know what you tell them. They are only as smart as the person who programs it. So the programmer is sitting there plunking away at the computer and telling it all the things he can imagine the computer might one day need to "see". Things are fine, the programmer, after typing in all the information he thinks he could ever need says "Voila! My computer, She is ready to see!" So he sets her up inserts the disk and thing are going along fine with ordinary pictures of cats and dogs, but then it comes to a camouflaged snake. First the computer doesn't recognize it because the programmer didn't remember to program that particular creature into the system. Then once the two of them established that the computer would have to get much more thorough in his picture bank he set forth to write everything he read from a dictionary. Long and tedious work, but what else does this programmer have to do? So he has copied out the entire dictionary. He is proud of himself and tries again to see what the computer can see. And the computer has a greatly expanded repertoire of images available. But then the computer has to conquer the task of still being able to perceive the image with a different stance. And the computer isn't able to do this because it was taught that a wolf was a creature that sat on his haunches and howled at moons. So the scientist would have to enter every type of situation possible, and that is not possible. Humans have very plastic cells which can adapt to a situation. The computer at present doesn't. That is the miracle of life! Always imitated but never duplicated. .
