In Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue" he has set the perfect example for the "short story mystery". Poe's creation Dupin influenced many authors including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; And may be partially responsible for Sherlock Holmes creation as shown in "The Adventure of the Speckled Band". The characters of their characters are very important while looking at these two authors" works. Holmes and Dupin are so similar it is obvious that there was some influence. The main difference that is between them is the English Channel. To all their stories there is a certain way of coming together at the end. Shown through what is sometimes called the "Scooby Doo" ending do to the famous cartoon that also got it's plot plan from Dupin. .
Dupin is presumed single and young. He likes puzzles shown in the text "He was very fond of enigmas, of conundrums, hieroglyphics-(Poe 102). It is obvious to the reader that Dupin does this for personal fulfillment and not fame or money. As Dupin says in his own words "My ultimate object is only the truth"(Poe 129). So hey says him self that that is all he is searching for.
Dupin was a private detective told to us by a critic " Dupin is a private citizen, neither presently nor formerly a policeman, nor associated with police in there work"(Lowndes 97). Dupin is not part of any government organization, including the police. Although he did see the police as inferior "Dupin respected the police on there level of competence-(Lowndes 96). He also thinks they are good at most crimes because most crimes are small says Lowndes.
Dupin is a master at the detective work. He was known to be good because he was really good. He even some times shocked his friends except the narrator who is a close personal friend. But his skills where very well toned to the point were others wish they had this talent. Like the Narrator in this passage " I could not help remarking and admiring a peculiar analytic ability in Dupin"(Poe 107).
