The movie we watched was The Sixth Sense. I liked this movie because it was extremely interesting to me. I enjoyed the initial suspense of the movie, and the psychological factors that one notices after another viewing.
One psychological factor represented in this movie was Munchausen by proxy. In this disorder, a parent or caretaker deliberately exaggerates and fabricates or induces physical and/or psychological-behavioral-mental health problems in others. Obvious examples of this disorder were demonstrated in the movie. For one, a mother was poisoning her stepdaughter, who ends up dying in the movie. Once this daughter dies, people start noticing that her other stepdaughter has begun to get sick as well, showing that the mother craves constant attention, which is a noticeable sign of Munchausen by proxy. With these examples in the movie, this factor was accurately portrayed.
Another psychological factor exhibited in The Sixth Sense is depression. Depression is a mood disorder in which a person experiences two or more weeks of depressed moods, feelings of worthlessness, and diminished interest or pleasure in most activities. After Dr. Crow's death, his wife begins showing major signs of depression. For instance, she has Zoloft, an antidepressant medication, in a cabinet. Also, she goes out to dinner alone, and she constantly reflects on her marriage to Malcolm by watching the tapes of the wedding. Finally, she keeps to herself and does not really socialize with others; she does not want to move on. Depression was accurately displayed in this film.
One final psychological factor demonstrated in this movie was child psychologist. A child psychologist is a psychologist specializing in the study of adolescents. Dr. Crow was a child psychologist. Before his death, he receives an award from the mayor of Philadelphia in honor of his hard work and dedication to the field of child psychology.
