Lunch On Omaha Beach : An Essay on literary devices

The words" watching" and "wondering" imply that the poet is remembering and accepting the past that he can not change. It seems as if the speaker in the poem has come to the beach for closure. Contrasting from the afore mentioned quote, is the quote " body of his scream." In the previous quote "quiet" is used to describe the present day Omaha Beach while " scream" is used to describe the past, war torn Omaha Beach. Also, to describe a scream as having a body allows the reader to understand the power and horror which was contained in this war cry. Another example of imagery is used in the line , "Death's great bronze mares shook earth and bloodied them." This is a powerful image. This describes death in such an intense manner which is startling to the reader. It almost sounds like something out of a supernatural, Greek myth. To describe death's minions as .
" great bronze mares" makes death seem like something more palpable. The words " shook earth" make this great death seem like a natural phenomenon. Like an inescapable earthquake in which everyone is doomed to die. This also verifies Noll's feeling of resentment and contempt for the war. He illustrates that the deaths of the soldiers were not peaceful, but painful and bloody. Not one soul would want a fellow being to die in a horrible manner. These deaths were inevitable due to the fact that it has been proven impossible for humans to exist without war. Noll acknowledges this fact when he describes death as having the power to shake earth. Noll's use of imagery informs the reader of his feeling towards the war through contrast and further clarifies the theme of the poem.
Like the imagery and title of this poem, the word choice also illustrates Noll's contrasting views of the war. The wording in this poem often seems to be cold, clinical, and devoid of emotion. While most would describe a soldier as a hero, Noll chooses the word "killer.
