Many people, mostly students, despise the idea of uniforms, but I, along with numerous parents, teachers, and school officials, strongly support it. One requirement for a good school is a safe and disciplined learning environment. A uniform policy could be the solution. Possible benefits include the increase of school safety, decrease of peer pressure, and can also promote the school environment. .
School safety is a major issue. The principal and other staff members are constantly making sure that students feel safe at school. At least half of us do, and if we had a uniform policy, it would help increase that number. If somebody unfamiliar started wandering around the school, we'd immediately know that they didn't belong on school grounds. Cases of theft would decrease, which mostly occur due to designer clothing, valuable jewelry, and expensive brand name footwear. Gangs would not be permitted to wear their gang colors during school because of the dress code, which would prohibit the display of gang activity. .
Another reason for uniforms is peer pressure to own the coolest and most expensive clothes. If we wore uniforms, this would no longer exist. Most less-fortunate students dread leaving their house in the morning because they are embarrassed of the clothes they wear. They can't afford designer clothing, so they get made fun of. People that oppose school uniforms say that they can be costly. Yes, after a few years, the money adds up. However, they aren't that expensive. Besides, most schools have financial aid to help families who can't afford uniforms. It may cost the school a lot of money, but that's not the only solution. At the end of the year, the graduating class could donate their old uniforms to the "financially challenged". This way money could be saved, and uniforms could be re-used. .
With uniforms, the resistance of teasing and the elimination of the social and economic status can enhance the school environment.
