Within a few decades of its founding, Barings achieved considerable international success, so much so that in 1803 it helped Thomas Jefferson finance the Louisiana Purchase and funded some of America's first entrepreneurs prior to the Civil War. It also participated in funding the Panama Canal and the financing of the British campaign against Napoleon. But the Barings Bank wasn't merely powerful. It was also known for its family involvement, its high ethical standards and its human touch. In 1873 it became one of the first firms in London to employ women. In the mid-20th century it provided a number of employee incentives and perks such as, free lunches and retirement at age 60 on two-thirds of their earned salary.
In the early 1980's, Barings set up brokerage operations in Japan. With that successful venture, they decided to expand to Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and several other Asian countries. By 1992, Barings subsidiary in Singapore had a seat on the SIMEX, but they did not activate it due to lack of their expertise in trading futures and option contracts. Four months later Barings decided to activate its SIMEX seat and appointed Nick Leeson as General Manager of the Singapore subsidiary.
