Companies of all sorts often use women in advertisements to sell their product(s). They display women on billboards and magazines as sex symbols. As Trisha Grover of Duluth YSA says, "Advertising frequently uses the image of sex or sexual pleasure to sell a product that has nothing to do with sex."" Just to name a few, companies such as BMX, Bebe, and Virgin Mobile all have done an advertisement that degrades women. .
BMX, a bike company, has many advertisements for their video game that displays sexy women in skimpy outfits. One of the advertisements has a woman sitting in a limo wearing a blue wig, blue bra, and stilettos with a dog sitting between her legs. This is supposed to be advertising a game that has to do with bikes. There was no bike displayed in the picture. In addition, this advertisement included words such as " Enter your Bitch"" and "Keep it dirty."" They also have a website where you can see more advertisements promoting their video game called www.bmxxxx.com.
A clothing and shoe company for girls called "Bebe"" also has advertisements portraying girls in a sexual manner. One of the advertisements displays a young lady wearing nothing but "strappy"" stiletto heels, is advertised in most teen magazines. This advertisement gives out an implied message that by wearing those sandals you can look sexy. According to Larry McQuarrie, "Messages in the mass media diminish women in a way that should make us all ashamed.""(Par.2).
Another company that gives out messages that degrade women is a cell phone company called "virgin mobile."" One of their ads has a question saying, "What's fun, sexy and not looking for a commitment?"" Then under it has picture of a young lady laughing with a cell phone that has the message "I'm easy, take me home, turn me on."" This message is suppose to be pertaining to the cell phone and not the young lady in the picture, yet the audience gets mislead into thinking that the messages were talking about the young lady.
