Increase use of plastic surgery

Are you tired of your nose being too big? Do you have one minute deformity that just seems to throw your whole physical charm off? Plastic surgery can be your ticket to the perfect look; all your worries and woes of what people think of your appearance can vanish with one surgery. Whether you are for plastic surgery or against it, there is no getting away from it. Our society has become one of superficiality and this is very apparent in almost everything that we encounter in everyday life. The one thing that successfully contributes to this pathetic fact is the media. Sadly enough, the media is our number source for the shaping and molding of our perceptions. Every American comes in contact with media of all forms that expresses the "perfect look" of a human being. With this being expressed more and more to people it has desensitized us from the morals of plastic surgery, which in turn has become more socially acceptable. Whatever the reason may be, according to an article in The Star Phoenix, more than 7.4 million North Americans had cosmetic surgery in the year 2000. That is a 198-per-cent increase since 1992 (Zdeb E3). With such a dramatic increase, there is no denying that plastic surgery is accepted and that our society is in fact, superficial.
Being superficial means strictly caring about what is on the surface. The main reason people choose to have plastic surgery is to improve their physical beauty and become more appealing to everyone else, because the mass majority of Americans have come to mostly notice only the physical attributes of other human beings. To most people, being beautiful or handsome will give that person a huge boost of confidence raising their self-esteem. Dr. Paul Lubitz, a cosmetic surgeon, admits "the goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve a patient's appearance and, through this, to improve their image and sense of self-worth" (Zdeb, E3). If a respected doctor feels this way, it proves that looking good can get you things that other people cannot have and unfortunately this is the case.
