Business ethics

This article takes a look at the different generations of people in the workforce today. In today's workforce there are a wide variety of people, not only of different ethnic backgrounds, but also of different age generations. These different age generations cause the workers to have different values driving their behaviors. Today's workforce includes people born before and after Watergate, and the sexual revolution. There are those who have experienced a period of downsizing and have learned to accept it as a natural part of the working life. Older workers still dwell on the idea of getting a job, and retaining it for the rest of their lives. The possibility of lifetime employment with the same company to older workers has rewards both monetary and emotionally. However, many younger workers see it differently. They do not rely on corporate promises, instead relying upon themselves to plan for retirement, and to guarantee long-term security.
Dianne Durkin is one specialist who analyzes the different generations in the workforce, and how their upbringing and experiences have affected their value base in the workplace. "Boomers grew up in an era of opportunity with their values shaped by the landing on the moon, Woodstock, the civil rights movement, and Vietnam," said Durkin. At work, Durkin said, they tend to be very driven and can be "workaholic." She half-jokingly credits them with inventing the 60-hour work week and adds that boomers view work as a form of self-fulfillment: They live to work. On the other hand the generation X group has seen scandals and downsizing, and in their distrust they simply work to live.
It is amazing to me how different experiences can cause such different values and different motivation background. I would say that the workforce will only change more in the next few years when my generation enters the workforce. Society is becoming more self-reliant, people do not want to work together; they do not want to help each other.
