It is only recently that we were told hockey was prohibited on school grounds, the reasons were:.
1) Someone might get hurt or injured.
2) Someone might damage the schoolyard with hockey sticks.
3) Someone would scare off visitors to the school. .
The school rules are there for students to be safe, to keep the school a clean place, and to be popular among the community as one of the top high schools. Yes, these are all positive things, but it's not benefiting the students at all. These activity rules are what causes students to turn to activities behind the school like smoking marijuana or snorting cocaine - aren't these harmful towards students? So what if the school has a good image among the community and media? This is the only way out for the school officials from being responsible for their silly rules and the bad habits students start to pick up throughout their high school years. Good image and high scores are standing as a scapegoat for all school officials. Whatever happened to boosting students" confidences up or trying to help students learn new activities they can try out?.
Those three reasons to prohibit hockey on school ground is the wrong way to solve the problem, and would lead to trouble rather than a solution. I am quite aware of the fact that roller hockey players are looked down upon as troublemakers, but that's just an age-old stereotype set from various TV shows and movies. It is the same as saying that all people who eat at fast food restaurants are fat. The fact of the matter is that although there are those out there who tarnish the name for all hockey players, they are only a small percentage of the whole. With that said, there are plenty of roller hockey players that play solely for the love of the game. Hockey players play hockey to compete, to exercise, and to relax from our daily routines. Students do not play hockey in order to cause trouble for others nor do we play to scare people off.
