Bluest Eye

"They tried never to glance at her , and called on her only when everyone was required to respond." She is the only member in her class who sat alone at a double desk. Pecola knew that when one of the girls at school wanted to insult a boy, she could say " Bobby loves Pecola Breedlove! Bobby loves Pecola Breedlove" and get an immediate response of anger from the boy. In addition, after school one day a group of boys circle around Pecola and begin making fun of her chanting, "Black e mo. Black e mo. Yadaddsleepnekked. Black e mo black e mo." With both her teachers and classmates being so cold to her, it is inevitable that Pecola would feel alone and isolated. She believed that being beautiful with blond hair and blue eyes, would lead to her happiness.
Pecola is led to further isolation by the harsh reality that no one loves her. All of the support that a young child needs is not there. Her family hates her "ugliness," her teachers abhor her, her classmates ridicule her constantly, and people in the town ignore her. Her adult role models are three prostitutes. Although these three women provide her with some entertainment in her depressing life, they do not help with or advise her about some of her problems. Her only real friends are the other two main characters in the story, Frieda and Claudia MacTeer. However they are relatively powerless in helping her and her situation. All they can do is pray for her and hope that everything will turn out all right. .
All of the isolation and negativity in Pecola's life finally escalates when she is in the kitchen washing dishes. Her father, Cholly, who is extremely drunk, becomes overwhelmed with pity by his outcast daughter. The only way he knows how to express warm is sexually, through an incestuous rape. Some people later even try to put the blame on her, saying that she didn't fight her father. Pecola then becomes pregnant and is asked to leave school.
