Topic Sentence Tasso's growth begins when he first realizes that the Great Man does not know everything. T In fact, Point 1 the Great Man does not even know why Tasso smuggles. Lead In During their private game, he asks Tasso, Textual Evidence 1 "Why do you smuggle? It is against the interests of our country" Parenthetical Reference (4). T Surely, Lead Out a man as powerful as the Great Man would know smuggling occurs, yet he does not. Point 2 The Great Man shows his ignorance a T second time by telling Tasso that his wife denounced him because of jealously. Lead In He tells Tasso, TE 2 "Jealously makes all women dangerous. Yes, I think it was your wife who denounced you" PR (6). Lead In The Great Man assumes Tasso's wife is jealous because he believes, TE 3 "a man who lands from sea after twenty-four hours with a fresh rose in his coat gives himself away" PR (6). The Great Man, T however, is unaware that the rose is TE4"wax-coated silk" PR (6). Lead In The Great Man does not know this, but Tasso tells him to TE5 "ask any man in this town and he will tell you that I always wear it" (6). TClearly, Lead Out the Great Man does not know even facts that are common knowledge. T The third and most deadly truth that the Point 3 Great Man does not perceive is how dangerous Tasso could be to him. Lead In Near the end of their encounter, the Great Man threatens Tasso, yet Tasso is unafraid because TE 6 "from the back of his coat he [Tasso] pulled a knife and placed it on the desk." (7). Lead In He proves to the Great Man that he could have killed him, but he did not because he says, TE7 "I am a fisherman, not an assassin" (7). Lead Out In the end, the Great Man's ignorance might have cost him his life. TAs a result of the Great Man's ignorance, Clincher Tasso discovers that even though a man is great, he is not omniscient.
