Both Eveline from "Eveline" and Connie from"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" possess and unyielding insecurity which stems from their family lives. "Everything about her had two sides to it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home- Each of the girl's home life was oppressive and restraining. This is especially stressful for a young girl who desires freedom, love, and security. .
Eveline is walking the same path of misery and passiveness her mother did because of her manipulative father. The psychological abuse induced by her father is made apparent by her strong desire to start a new life with Frank, her psychological messiah. However, because of her obligations to her family, and the seed of insecurity blooming inside of her planted by her father, she ultimately becomes overwhelmed and denies salvation. .
Connie also experiences the same psychological strain from her mother. It appears as though her mother's insecurity is the source of her own. Being a young, beautiful girl, her mother has grown more and more resentful as Connie grows into the beautiful woman that she once was. "Why don't you keep your room clean like your sister? How've you got your hair fixed - what the hell stinks? Hair spray? You don't see your sister using that junk." Her mother constantly makes condescending remarks comparing her and her sister as desperate attempts to make Connie feel like less than she is.
Eveline was drawn to Frank because he seemed to have sincere feelings for her. Frank provided her with security and a self-esteemed which she had never previously felt. She not only assumed a romantic role in her life, but also acted as a father figure. However all of these new feelings seemed to overwhelm her. "She was about to explore another life with Frank." Eveline was stepping into territory she was not familiar with. Living her whole life in the shadow of her father and guilt over her mother's death created a conflict within her between what she wanted and what she felt she had to do.
