Every structure is built off a foundation, and a human's foundation is their family. Family is a structure that can help develop a child into what they will be and what they will accomplish. When a child is faced with a bad family life that is an obstacle they have to start climbing the minute they are born into this harsh world, that child must be strong to succeed in this demanding world. I felt that the poem "Therapy" by Kim Addonizio was a poem about a woman that did not have a very supportive family growing up, and chose to try and find help through a therapist. .
"Therapy" is a sonnet that is not broke into stanzas. Another interesting this about this sonnet is that is does not have many surprising turns, but the last two lines do deliver a very interesting point. This poem has regular rhyme and consists of fourteen lines. .
One thing that I was unclear about in this poem was whether the person that was dragging the speaker around was her father or her brother. The poem opens with, "My brother's in the house," and a few stanzas down she writes, "that helpless day,/ my fathers drinking." I feel that because she mentions that her father was drinking it must have been him that was abusing her and perhaps her brother. .
The end of this poem is also mystifying. I have run the last lines through my head for several minutes. I feel that they are confusing at first, but short and precise after much thought, "Time's up. You"re in the house. I"m through the door." I think that what the speaker is saying is that the therapist is able to see into her past, but the speaker is not feeling any better. She is back to her old life of running from her fears and her father.
