"That's enough--people want to look at her, not listen to her." As Allison interviews her on camera, George meets up with his old friend Tibor, who asks what he's up to these days: "Another brilliant series?" (Insert comment here.) George says he has no brilliance left, hence resorting to celebrity profiles to make a living; he couldn't think of an idea good enough for that film he was talking about making. "So you're a hack again," Tibor says cheerfully. He's not criticizing George, he hastens to add; he admires him for realizing the limitations of his own ideas. "Better to remain silent than add to the cultural noise.too many horrible ideas produced with too much money and effort." Is Julia there with him, by the way?.
Before George can answer, Sarah, a beautiful young woman in a bikini, comes running out of the ocean: "George! The water's perfect, you have to go in!" Explaining that she needs to rehearse, she kisses George and runs off. "Now I see why Julia's not here," says Tibor, amused. George says Sarah is a singer he's been seeing for a few months. Is Tibor here alone? Tibor hails Maria, his girlfriend, who walks up and in heavily accented French asks Tibor if she's lit her cigarette properly: "You've taught me to do such horrible things," she says flirtatiously. "That's why I adore you." Tibor introduces Maria to George; still speaking in French, she tells him that Tibor has said he, George, is talented but doesn't know who he is anymore. Tibor says he loves Maria for her honesty, and that George should put her in his next film, "if you ever make it," because she'd be a natural actress.
As Maria excuses herself to freshen up for lunch, George asks if they're married. Tibor laughs derisively: "Why let the state into your sex life?" He tells George he met Maria on this same beach last summer, "under very unusual circumstances," and they're back to celebrate the first anniversary of that event; if George comes to lunch with them, he'll tell the whole story.
