Gun Control

It made it harder to obtain handguns but it also introduced the AK-47. The AK-47 is a military issued automatic weapon with a longer barrel, similar to a riffle. Because of the longer barrel it allowed this weapon to fall under much more lenient gun laws and became the new weapon of choice for thieves and gangsters. In many drive by shooting cases the AK-47 was used and attained legally (Cashman). It is a shame that military weapons that are designed to help protect our great country are being used against innocent people to inflict harm and death.
             The many attacks by automatic assault weapons evenly led to stricter assault weapon regulation. Nevertheless, the percent of assault weapons used in violent crimes has decreased very little. This leads experts to believe that many assault weapons related crimes were committed with illegal weapons (Silver 78). This is a great example of how criminals will always find another way to get possession of a gun.
             We must consider it is always possible to make an already bad situation worse. If gun control laws were past that would not allow citizens to posses a firearm, think of the sudden up rise there would be in crime and burglary. With criminals having no fear of entering a home, what is to keep them out? Another problem with taking our right away of bearing arms would be that the criminals would be the only one's with the guns. This might not be clear to everyone but it is true. Think about all the illegal drugs and weapons that are smuggled into our country every year. Most likely many people would not know were to buy a bag of coke or a fully automatic weapon. But somehow the problem always still exists. Then on the other hand it is always the poverty stricken people and the junkies that have drugs and are around these types of situations daily. So what I am trying to say is that it will be easier for gangsters and junkies to get a weapon then say an average middle class man or a CEO of a company for that matter.
