St. Lucy


In both incidents her eyes were miraculously restored before her death. Her relics are honored in churches throughout Europe.
             The name, Lucy, means light, linking her with eyes, the blind, and eye troubles. She is the patronage against hemorrhages, authors, blind people, blindness, cutlers, dysentery, eye disease, eye problems, glaziers, laborers, martyrs, peasants, Perugia, Italy, saddlers, salesmen, stained glass workers, Syracuse Sicily, throat infections, and writers. She is commemorated in the ancient Roman Martyr logy. St. Aldeim is the first writer who uses her Acts to give a full account of her life and death. .
             St. Lucy has made many contributions to the Church. She promoted celibacy and martyrs throughout the world; both in the fourth century and today. She showed what true faith could bring to a person, with the miracle of her mother's disease suddenly cured. She gives the blind people of our world today hope that one day with enough faith in God, they could be saved and see once again. She is a great role model to people in the Church today because of her strong faith in God. She overcame many obstacles in her life, and faced persecution for being a Christian; yet she did not lose faith in God. There is a saying that people use on her feast day, which goes: "Lucy-light, Lucy-light/The shortest day and the longest night." In Scandinavia her feast day is the cause for special celebration. In Sweden, In Sweden, on her feast day, the youngest girl of the household makes a procession around the house, with a headdress of candles. She serves her family sweet buns and coffee. She is often portrayed with a wreath of candles on her head, as she is bearing her eyes on a plate, or dangling them from a stalk like two cherries.
             St. Lucy is a very big role model in my life today. I have always prayed to St. Lucy since I was younger. My great-grandmother introduced me to Saint Lucy when I was four years old.
