Playboy of the Western World-Review

She is very defensive of things that people talk about and especially herself. One instance in act one is when her father, Michael, makes fun of Shawn by holding up his coat and saying that he is a Christian and only abides by the priest. Pegeen lashes out and says, "What right do you have to be making game of a poor fellow for minding the priest?" She then rips the coat away from him and takes it behind the counter. Her attitude was fierce through many scenes of the play and her constancy in this made her character very believable.
Widow Quin, played by Dayle Pivetta, fit the role in adding an extra deceitfulness to the character. When Widow made her first appearance, it was almost as though she was shouting to the world, "I am Widow Quin and I get everything that I want." There was something about her that seemed conniving and bittersweet. In act two, she expresses an interest in marrying Christy. Shawn is in love with Pegeen and Christy has feeling for Pegeen. Widow bribes Shawn by saying, "What would you give me if I did wed Christy and did save you so? With this, she is deceitful to others and seems nice but only when she can get a benefit in return. This attitude is carried by her through the entire play and makes the character very believable.
All actors and actresses in the play required an Irish accent, which by far can be considered a special skill. With this comes the ability to be audible and understandable for the audience. Unfortunately, for myself, some of the actors didn't meet these abilities, and I was sitting in the fourth row. (I am lucky to have been familiar with this play before viewing it or else I would not have understood anything that was happening.) The character that was most difficult in understanding and hearing was Pegeen. This was a shame because I could tell that she was fit for the role and had the strong attitude to do it. The Irish accent that she used was too strong.
