Angela


            "Angela's Ashes" starts out with the narrator and main character, Frank McCourt, telling how his parents met in Brooklyn, New York. When Angela becomes pregnant with Frank she marries the father, Malachy McCourt. Malachy is an alcoholic without any money or job prospects. He spends all of his money on drinks and nights out on the bar, meanwhile Angela is stuck at home to care for the children without any money. After Frank is born around a year later Malachy is born. After Malachy is born the twins Eugene and Oliver are born. After the twins birth Margaret was born, but she dies shorty after her birth. Angela becomes upset and falls into a depression. Because the money has ran out and Angela won't eat because she is so upset over the loss of her child the McCourts move back to Limerick, Ireland to be helped by the family. .
             When the McCourt family returns the twins become ill. First Oliver dies and then shortly after Eugene dies. At this point Angela is so overwhelmed with emotions that she doesn't know what to do. The house that they are living in is where all of the neighbors throw their excrement. In the winter there house becomes flooded on the bottom and they are forced to live upstairs where it is warm and dry. Angela and Malachy say to the family that they will move from the first floor, Ireland, to the second floor, Italy. They say that it will be like a vacation. Even though Malachy uses up all of the money for the boos while the children starve, he still earns Frank's respect by telling him wonderful stories about Irish Heroes and the neighbors. Frank loves these stories and is very entertained by them when they are told. Over the course of a couple of years Angela gives birth to Michael, whom Frank thinks was places on their step by an Angel, and Alphonsus. Everyone calls Alphonses, Alphie for short. Frank doesn't like the name Alphie and wants to name him something else.
