British policy concerning Ireland


In 1798 revolt for independence was suppressed harshly.
             In 1801 parliamentary self-government of Ireland was liquidated and Parliament was abolished. The Irish representatives got a few places in the English parliament.
             In XIX century Ireland became agrarian appendage of England.
             In 1829 the English government had to give the Irish Catholics eligibility. But, nevertheless, uprisings flared up anew.
             During the First World War the Irish tried to use difficulties of Great Britain, but the Irish uprising 1916 was suppressed as usual.
             In 1919 the nationalist movement Sinn Fein ('Ourselves Alone'), led by Eamonn De Valera, set up a Dublin assembly, the Dail Eireann, which again proclaimed Irish independence. A guerrilla campaign by the Irish Republican Army (IRA), against British forces began with heavy casualties on both sides. .
             In 1920 The British parliament past the Government of Ireland Act establishing one parliament for the six counties of Northern Ireland, and another for the rest of Ireland. .
             Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 established the Free State, an independent dominion of the British crown with full internal self-government rights, partitioned from Northern Ireland which remained part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Since this time there began new relationships between these islands. Ireland became really an independent island (except Northern Ireland).
             In 1922 The Dublin parliament ratified the treaty despite the opposition of De Valera and others. Civil war broke out and hundreds were killed. .
             In 1923 the Irish Free State joined the League of Nations. .
             In 1927 De Valera entered parliament at the head of the new Fianna Fail party. .
             Later in 1932 De Valera became head of government after previous administration fails to deal with economic difficulties. De Valera introduced various measures to eliminate British influence in the Irish Free State.
