Coping with Roommates

For one to understand what it is to be quiet, you must first be familiar with the root of the word. The word is derived from the Latin word quies, meaning to rest, it later became quiet in Middle English and from there is where we get the current usage. The word "quiet" also has a variety of different meanings, it can be used is almost all contexts as a noun, verb, adjective, and adverb. As a noun it is the quality or state of being quiet, an example of this would be, keep the events that happened on that night on the quiet. Comparatively, as an adjective it means marked by little or no motion or activity, such as, when you are in a large group it is hard to keep quiet. Enough with the boring details and etymology of the word, now for the task at hand, to discuss the necessity of remaining quiet within the microcosmic world of dormitory living.
Quiet hours are important for many reasons, such as having privacy, sleep, and your need and desire to study. Since most of the people that come to this campus have never experienced a community style living. The initial adjustment and culture shock is difficult to deal with in the first place and that is excluding noisy and obnoxious tenants. Quiet hours are put in place to maintain order and discipline, without these guidelines we would live in a community full of noise pollution and other distractions. It is essential for students of higher learning to be able to get away from these distractions so they can focus and concentrate on their work. There is enough stress in "college life" already; there is no need to add more stress and frustration when you have to deal with noisy dorm mates. Another concern is mental and physical health, it's not as farfetched as you might think. Stress is a serious factor that can lead to mental illness as well as physical illness. In fact a friend of mine suffered a heart palpation just the other day due to stress related problems.
