Heat output of a bunsen burner

The Heat Output Of A Bunsen Burner Flame.

To compare the heat output of a Bunsen burner using different types of flames.
             Preliminary Work.
For my preliminary work I investigated three fuels to see which had the highest temperature. These fuels were hexamine, candle and a paraffin lamp. I did this experiment by putting a beaker of water (200ml) over the burning fuel and recording the initial and final mass. The temperature was risen 20c and using the results we found the temperature rise per gram. This helped design this experiment because it has the same idea of a beaker over the burning fuel. The difference is that we are seeing the heat given off by the Bunsen burner flame and not the fuel.
             Theory and Prediction.
I predict that the flame will be at its hottest when the air hole of the Bunsen burner is totally open and the gas tap is on full (roaring flame). I predict that the flame with the air hole closed and the gas tap on slightly will make a flame with little heat compared to the full roaring flame.
Methane and oxygen give off carbon dioxide and water so:.
             CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2G2O.
I also predict that the roaring flame will give off more heat than the safety flame no matter how far the gas tap is on.
             Apparatus .
Bunsen burner - this is the main equipment for this experiment and will also be the heating implement.
Tripod and Gauze - this will be used so that the beaker can be heated from underneath whilst standing on the tripod and gauze.
250ml measuring cylinder - this will help us measure the water more accurately.
Beaker (250ml) - this will contain the water whilst we are heating.
Thermometer - this will be used so we can measure the temperature while we are experimenting with the heat.
Heatproof mat - this will be used so you do not burn the bench incase of an accident.
Safety glasses - necessary for all experiments using Bunsen burners etc to protect your eyes.
             Safety.
During this experiment safety glasses must be worn at all times to protect your eyes.
