Dylan Thomas

In Thomas" Do Not Go Gentle into that Night, he describes his thoughts and experiences of death. The poem is very radiant and intense and due to the fact that the poem was written especially for Thomas's dying father it makes it even more touching in the emotional influence that the words express. The form on the poem is a villanelle, with a rhyme scheme alternating "night" and "day", which become somewhat symbolic for "life" and "death". Repetition is also used to emphasize the important lines, "Do not go gentle into that night" and "Rage, rage against the dying of the light". The poem is beautifully developed using various metaphors and other literally devices. Each of the six stanzas has a unique purpose but they are all linked, Thomas portrays the stages of man's life in his comparison to "good men", "wild men" and "grave men". The first stanza starts with the title of the poem said in a commanding way, and I would paraphrase it as "Do not give up easily". "Good night" in this case should be considered a metaphor and a pun. It is a pun because night is said to symbolize death and it is a metaphor because night is define as death and having a good death sounds quite revolting. In line two personification is applied ,"Old age should burn and rave", and on the same line "Close of day" is a metaphor. I think it offers a belief that even when old and ill, the man should stay energetic and even ask for help as long as he does not give in to death easily. The third line is a command repeated in most of the stanzas, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light", which means fight and complain against death if it's coming to take you. Stanzas 2, 3, 4, and 5 gives examples to persuade Thomas's father to "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" by what wise, good, wild and grave men have done. The second stanza says in simple words that even though wise men know that they cannot keep death away forever and if for any reason they didn't reach their goal in life yet, they don't accept death easily; they "Do not go gentle-.
