Suffrage

During the debate over expanding suffrage in the Age of Jackson, there were several major arguments. Although some arguments were more valid than others, they were all important. In the Age of Jackson the attempt to expand suffrage was a vicious struggle between those who supported and opposed expansion. Americans as well as people from other countries discussed the topic. It was one of the most popular points in Andrew Jackson's presidency. Whether the arguments that were presented were in support of or opposition of expansion, they were a crucial factor in the Age of Jackson.
Nathan Sanford, the chairman of a committee at an 1821 New York convention, supported the idea of expanding suffrage. The committee was in favor of revising the state constitution to drop the requirement that voters be property owners. Sanford stated, "To me the only qualifications [to vote] seem to be the virtue and morality of the people ." His belief would allow all white males to vote, still excluding African American males and all women. I agree that the right to vote should not be based upon whether you own property. However, I do not support the idea of allowing only white males to vote, because "all men are created equal". I feel as though all American citizens should have the right to vote. Moreover, this argument was somewhat valid, but it could have been improved.
Unlike Sanford, James Kent, Chief Justice of New York's highest court, opposed the 1821 proposal to disregard property ownership requirements. He thought that expanding suffrage would "jeopardize the rights of property and the principles of liberty". He categorized people in negative ways according to wealth and social status. " and there is a tendency in ambitious and wicked men to inflame these combustible materials." He makes several statements, including this one to express his biased opinions about how he feels expansion would affect the nation.
